Before I tell you more about the Women's Marketing and Business Network, let me tell you how I started my first business...
My name is Jean Serio. I'm a successful business woman in my 60s. I've started dozens of businesses and helped many other people start businesses too. If you look at me today, you'll see a confident, experienced business woman. But it wasn't always like that.
Like many women, I started out as an employee working for other people. I made a good salary and assumed I'd retire on a nice pension. I hated the rat race and the stress, but what could I do? I didn't know any other way to put food on the table.
Then my husband got laid off and that triggered a series of events that changed my life forever.
We decided to move back to our home state to be near our family. My husband found a job right away, but I had a hard time. My company planned to open another location near my new home. But when it didn't happen I found myself out of a job after years of loyalty and service.
I interviewed like crazy. Yet time and time again employers told me I was “too experienced.” That's code for “we want someone younger and cheaper.” And when I thought things couldn't get worse, I went to my doctor for a routine checkup and discovered I had cancer. For the next five years I suffered through treatments that made me sick and didn't seem to work.
Then one day while lying on the couch feeling sorry for myself, I saw a local couple on TV talking about their craft malls and how people could rent space and sell things they make. One of the malls was nearby, so I sent my husband to check it out.
I have always loved Christmas. My idea was to make crafty holiday items and sell them. I had no experience making or selling things, but I figured it was something to do until I felt better. So I started making things. It was fun. My spirits lifted immediately.
When I had enough stuff to sell, my husband rented a 4 x 4 booth for me, and even though I was still sick, I set up my booth and officially went into business. It was a struggle because I soon discovered I didn't know anything. I didn't understand the business or even know where to get supplies. My paychecks were as low as $25 a month.
But I'm stubborn, so I kept at it. Over time I graduated to larger spaces. Then I got into antiques. Soon I was selling other crafters' items in my booth. Eventually, I opened my own antique and gift shop with 60 people supplying me with merchandise. This grew into 3 stores with 200 suppliers.
As I recovered from my illness, I found myself forgetting about a job and becoming a full-fledged entrepreneur hosting bazaars at popular venues, buying and selling antiques, and becoming more and more profitable despite all the odds against me.
Along the way, other women began asking me how I got started and I took them under my wing and helped them start businesses of their own. And of all the things I've accomplished, helping other women succeed is the most satisfying for me.
That's where I got the idea for the Women's Marketing and Business Network. Now I'm helping thousands of women all over America (and even some in other countries) start, run and profit from their very own business.
